Note for the Second Edition: This essay was written in 2012, before Gretchen Carlson left Fox News in the wake of a sexual harassment settlement against Fox founder Roger Ailes. Additionally, since Donald Trump was elected president, numerous press reports have detailed the intimate relationship President Trump has with the program—not just as a regular viewer and guest on the program but also by routinely allowing conversations and opinions on the program to influence or direct presidential communications and administration policy edicts.
